About the Institute
The UTeach Institute was established in 2006 in response to national concerns about the quality of K-12 education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—collectively known as the STEM fields—and a growing interest in an innovative teacher preparation program at The University of Texas at Austin. Since 1997, the UTeach Austin program has been so successful at significantly increasing the number of certified STEM teacher graduates that it has received widespread acclaim, spurring inquiries from universities around the world.
Mission
Recognizing the need for a nationally viable strategy for the reform of STEM field education, the UTeach Institute has crafted a dual mission:
to support replication of the UTeach teacher preparation program at universities across the U.S. and to lead efforts toward continuous improvement of the UTeach program model.
The goal of this effort is to increase the number of highly qualified science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers nationwide.
